Prescriptions

People who are diagnosed with coeliac disease are entitled to receive Gluten free foods through the NHS.

Items available are staple food items....bread and bread rolls, pizza bases, flour mixes, pasta, plain biscuits and crackers.

Luxury items, ie chocolate coated biscuits are not allowed...and there is a wide selection of items, from biscuits to Christmas puddings, available through Supermarkets and Health Food shops.

Your healthcare professional...maybe your dietician, the Practice Nurse at the Health Centre or your GP will be able to advise on products.

To assist in selection, there is a handy list of items with the Pip codes that are used to identify products.

Just click on screen...print the list,  fill in the quantities that you would like, and give it to your Medical Practitioner.

How much Gluten free food would you need?

Estimate how much bread, pasta etc you would normally have eaten within a month before being diagnosed. Your doctor can then calculate how much Gluten free food to prescribe you and a dietician will then have the ability to provide you with further information and help to work out how much Gluten free food you should eat in your new diet.

Remember not all foods can keep for long so you don’t want to order too much, smaller quantities are also much easier to store.  Many items are "freezer friendly" and are packed ready for the freezer.

New guidelines are available to help you and your Health Care Professional decide how much should be prescribed to you

How often should I order my prescription?

Most people get their prescriptions monthly, however depending on your situation it may be easier to get a prescription every few weeks. You may also find it cheaper to buy a pre-payment certificate. In order to buy a pre-payment certificate you need to complete an FP95 form. Ask your pharmacist for further information or visit the Department of Health website www.dh.gov.uk to purchase it directly.

The Department of Health can also tell you the current cost of prescriptions and whether you are entitled to free prescriptions. Visit their website or call 0845 850 0030.
